Shetland Seafish Salmon

Shetland salmon is world-renowned as being an industry leader for quality salmon delivered consistently and reliably. The Shetland Islands are located 100 miles from the Scottish mainland the remote wild waters providing the perfect habitat for salmon rearing.

Shetland SeaFish can supply a full range of salmon products including frozen salmon portions in a polybag for retail or boxes for wholesale.

In addition to these products Shetland SeaFish has a year round supply of whole salmon, salmon fillets (all trims), fresh or frozen salmon portions to customers own specification.

Shetland SeaFish is committed to sourcing salmon from local farmers who themselves have a vested interest in caring for their own environment. Salmon in Shetland is reared responsibly as no salmon is farmed in lochs in Shetland but in the exposed inlets that surround the islands.

It is these exposed inlets with their strong tidal currents that ensure the salmon are constantly forced to swim hard all day just like they would in the wild. This in turn creates a quality salmon marked by a lean firm flesh.

History and Development
Shetland has been at the forefront of the Scottish aquaculture industry since it’s inception in the 1980’s. As the industry has developed Shetland companies have kept up to date with modern cutting edge technology ensuring quality systems are maintained efficiently.

One of the most significant developments was the creation of Shetland Seafood Quality Control (SSQC).

For those who wish to subscribe to the quality scheme SSQC act with complete impartiality as an independent auditor of companies. SSQC investigates all aspects of a company’s operation tracing the salmon right from egg to the processed salmon product.

Shetland Seafood Quality Control (SSQC)
Shetland has sought to differentiate itself from the rest of the competition on the basis of quality. From salmon growers to processors each sector is governed by a strict code of practice controlled by SSQC www.ssqc.co.uk. As an auditor they have been fully accredited by United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) www.ukas.com an independent government body.

Animal welfare is a top priority for Shetland SeaFish, not only do we seek to promote a caring and responsible use of the environment, but we encourage our suppliers to use animal friendly procedures in their husbandry. If the fish are not stressed then the quality of the salmon is considerably better, so it is in our own interests to ensure animal welfare.

Salmon Benefits
Salmon as a food source is still a top quality and versatile product and can provide an essential dietary component for anyone from vegetarians to diabetics. Salmon is rich in Omega 3 fish oils that have been clinically proven to yield significant health benefits, including a reduction in heart disease.

For a variety of cooking ideas SalmonRecipes.Net website has many good cooking ideas. For even more ideas then the Shetland Aquaculture website also contains great culinary suggestions.

Shetland salmon not only possesses all the health benefits but is highly regarded by the culinary experts as the only source of quality salmon, Joe Queen is a member of the Master Chefs of Great Britain, vice president of the Federation of Chefs Scotland, and operations director of the Monument Leisure hotel group.

“ In particular, the presentation of Shetland farmed salmon in terms of freshness and colour is fabulous. It is a superb product and I will certainly ensure it is top of my shopping list from now on.”
Joe Queen, MCGB.

Shetland SeaFish Processing
The 30 years of seafood processing experience go a long way to enable Shetland SeaFish to provide you with your specific salmon requirements. The custom built salmon processing facility is situated a mere 100 metres from where salmon are reared.

The whole processing operation is carefully monitored and documented to provide full traceability, even back to egg producer. Shetland SeaFish is not a salmon farmer so we have full autonomy to purchase our salmon from wherever is best.

Whatever your particular requirements for salmon Shetland SeaFish is here to meet your requests. We produce a full range of products including fillets, portions to industrial blocks all produced either fresh or frozen to your exact specification.

Shetland Organic Salmon
The fish are reared in a way that seeks to mimic conditions in the wild. The salmon are stocked much more openly, with stocking densities less than half that of conventional salmon.

Fish shoal naturally in the strong tidal currents that surge around Shetland allowing the fish to swim 6,000 miles per year nearly the same as in the wild.

Allowing the salmon more space prevents problems and therefore the use of antibiotics is not required. In addition no chemicals or growth promoters are used at any stage of the salmon process ensuring the salmon is natural and pure.

The same philosophy has been used to formulate a special diet for the salmon. The feed contains no GM ingredients and is made from sustainable raw materials.
